Every once in a while I get a hankerin’ to read a western. It’s not my preferred genre, but I have enjoyed most of my forays into the literary wild west.

This story follows a woman’s quest to keep her land and home after discovering her recently deceased husband has mortgaged it away. This brings her and her brother-in-law to lead a band of buffalo hunters past the “dead line” and into the lawless territory in order to chase the lucrative herd.

There were so many things I enjoyed about this book. The writing style is the definition of “show, don’t tell.” The suspense, the feeling of danger, and the loneliness of the land itself are palpable in every page. Although there is almost no inner dialogue from any of the characters, I felt I could still read their thoughts and understand their conflictions.

Altogether it is a beautiful book and a surprise of a find. I highly recommend it.
